Apple's Podcasting in Education

K-12 teachers wanting to know how podcasting will enhance the learning environment should first take a look at Apple's Podcasting in Education site. The main page gives a quick and easy overview of podcasting in the classroom, and provides the steps for podcasting. A Sample Podcast section offers links to podcasts produced by real teachers and students. Note that you will need iTunes on your computer (a free download for PC or Mac and available via a link from the Apple site) to listen to these podcasts. Also, two free PDF guides -- Podcast Backbone and Podcast Creation -- provide detailed instructions on how to create or support (for the tech staff) a podcast. These guides do assume that you have Mac-specific software and hardware, but the remainder of the resources here are cross-platform, so be sure to dig around!

Effective Teaching stategies

What makes a good teacher:

What makes a good teacher? Like all good recipes, the ingredients for a teacher's success in the classroom are simple, easy to follow, and allow for personal interpretation to enhance the result. Primarily, a teacher's goal is to motivate her students to reach beyond their grasp. Many children are keenly aware of their weaknesses and special education students are particularly sensitive to being "different". A good teacher helps the child realize her strengths and encourages and challenges the student to learn through those strengths. It is in the day to day process of reaching this goal that the ingredients for making a good teacher come into play.

Philosophy Of Education

Educating for a Better Society
I feel that I take a very existentialist view on education. I think that there are many problems with our current education system and I think that we need that make drastic changes to the system that we currently use. In our current system not only are many students getting the raw deal but also we are not giving them a full education and turning students off from future education. The largest problem is testing. By testing we put a negative spin on the education of a student making them immediately not like it. Also children develop their learning skills at different times and testing causes negative self-image, which makes doing well in school impossible. Let me elaborate, if there are two students and ones brain will develop the skills to spell in 3rd grade and one will develop the skills in 4th grade. Even though both of these students have the same potential to have equal skill to spell in the end the student who does bad at spelling in 3rd...

Diversity in society

Students learning capabilities:

* Structured tasks which focus on specific and explicit strategies in the subject context;
* Capacity in lessons for more effective exchanges between the learner and the teacher concerning the purpose of the activity;
* Small group interactions promoting articulation about the use of learning strategies;
* Mechanisms built into learning tasks to promote checking for mutual understanding of learning goals by peers and with the teacher;
* Enhanced opportunities for the learner to receive diagnostic feedback linked directly to the content of the task.
We can also identify some necessary conditions for these approaches to be successful:
* The teacher needs to have good understanding of the subject, of different approaches to learning and be sensitive to the demands of different types of learners;
* Teachers should have a repertoire of practical tools and strategies to guide the learner and enhance opportunities for feedback about learning;
* Both teachers and learners should have an orientation towards learning characterised by a willingness to engage in dialogue and negotiation regarding the intent and purpose of a particular teaching and learning activity;
* The focus of learning should be on how to succeed through effort rather than ability and through the selection of appropriate strategies by the learner.

Blogging in the Classroom:

A blog is often a mixture of what is happening in a person's life and what is happening on the Web, a kind of hybrid diary/guide site, although there are as many unique types of blogs as there are people.People maintained blogs long before the term was coined, but the trend gained momentum with the introduction of automated published systems, most notably Blogger at blogger.com. Thousands of people use services such as Blogger to simplify and accelerate the publishing process.Blogs are alternatively called web logs or weblogs. However, "blog" seems less likely to cause confusion, as "web log" can also mean a server's log files.
